Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Marketing Manager will provide oversight and build deeper engagement through the design, implementation and evaluation of Smith’s multifaceted marketing programs and initiatives to deliver against defined objectives and measures. Responsibilities include developing integrated marketing programs, maximizing connections with a variety of demographics through the use of both traditional and new media; developing and implementing long-term sales and marketing strategies; and overseeing the Marketing and Communications websites and all pages contained within. The Manager will work directly with internal Smith clients to ensure alignment of marketing efforts to business needs and for effective collaboration to generate desired outcomes. This person will also commission and oversee work done by others in the department and at external vendors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plan, oversee, and develop marketing initiatives, ensuring objectives are clearly defined and met within set deadlines.
• Recommend, write, and edit content of ad, web, social, digital and collateral copy.
• Develop and support the implementation of marketing briefs, campaigns and reports, for new and strategically important initiatives within the unit.
• Provide marketing and communications expertise to other colleagues within the department, ensuring that communications strategies and tactics, including brochures, letters, emails, various publications and digital collateral (websites and web graphics, e-newsletters, social media initiatives) align with those of the School.
• Provide service to internal Smith clients to ensure marketing plans are aligned with business needs, while meeting expectations and goals, and for effective collaboration to generate desired outcomes.
• Direct other Marketing & Communications staff and external vendors to deliver campaign components to high quality and desired outcomes.
• Plan and implement a variety of marketing executions including digital and traditional advertising, search, social media and content, sponsorship activations, events and other tactics as required.
• Coordinate and supervise the distribution of coordinated e-mail campaigns and development and maintenance of appropriate mailing lists using internal and external communication platforms.
• Develop promotion strategies designed to maximize marketing programs.
• Manage project budgets, including reviewing all supplier estimates, reviewing all invoices prior to Director’s approval, and generating regular reports on expenditures.
• Determine content of presentations and reports of program progress; evaluate and make recommendations for improvements and changes.
• Participate on staffing committees and make effective recommendations regarding the selection of job candidates.
• Manage performance by establishing performance standards, reviewing, and evaluating performance, and providing ongoing feedback to employees. Formally evaluate performance at the end of the probationary period and conduct formal performance reviews on an ongoing basis.
• Assess staff training and development needs and ensure that employees receive orientation and training to improve and sustain performance. Support and encourage individual career/professional development.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• University degree focused in Marketing and Communications or other related field.
• Several years (5+ minimum) of experience working in a marketing role and in a customer-focused communications environment.
• Experience writing and editing in a variety of formats, including print and social media, combined with strong persuasive and marketing writing ability is required.
• Proven experience and understanding of best practices in a variety of marketing platforms including advertising, digital, search, and social.
• Strong understanding of industry standard advertising and web site performance analytics.
• Demonstrated understanding of marketing strategy and best practices.
• Experience working with a variety of computer programs including MS Office, including Word, Excel Outlook, PowerPoint. Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript would be considered an asset.
• Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Management skills and ability to motivate and create a positive work environment, sensitivity to issues affecting performance of staff, commitment to employee development and safety.

• Ability to develop tactical strategies from briefings, and assess merits of various marketing options.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing deadlines.
• Ability to determine how best to engage internal clients to ensure programs are on track and delivering results.
• Determine which stakeholders need to be consulted in arriving at marketing and communications decisions.
• Determine most efficient process in developing identified marketing and communication initiatives; provide recommendations as necessary.
• Determine what information is valuable for furthering marketing/communications objectives, in consultation with the Director.
• Decide how to balance time and priorities to ensure responsibilities are carried out effectively.
• Determine methods to assess effectiveness of marketing strategies, collect, analyze and evaluate feedback, and make recommendations for improvement.
• Assess the effectiveness of the various initiatives, report outcomes to the Director, and make recommendations for change.
• Coordinate information flow and determine how to present or report on information.
• Evaluates job candidates and makes effective recommendations on suitable hires.
• Makes decisions and/or effective recommendations regarding transfers and promotions.
• Evaluates employee performance and decides on appropriate training or coaching to address lack of proficiency in carrying out responsibilities, or remedial action for staff disciplinary situations.
• Assesses investigation outcome of grievances and makes effective recommendations on appropriate course of action or next steps on grievances.
