Job Summary

A Brief Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Teaching and Learning Team, the Instructional Designer works on a dynamic team with instructors and educational specialists to design high-impact learning activities for engineering students. The team is actively involved in the implementation of the Smith Engineering's Reimagining Engineering Education initiative which is focused on innovative pedagogical approaches, interdisciplinary and experiential learning, belonging and inclusion, and curricular change. The Instructional Designer will lead a variety of projects to create learning experiences that leverage a wide-range of delivery modes and are grounded in evidence-based pedagogical approaches. The incumbent is responsible for setting standards for the structure and overall quality of course design, course materials, building consensus with stakeholders and championing student-centred teaching and learning approaches in alignment with strategic priorities. The Instructional Designer will also fulfill the project management role on course design teams.

This position acts as the project manager for course development, including implementing and ensuring timelines, outlining course development plans and guiding the development process. This position provides subject matter expertise and leadership regarding courses to be re-offered or developed, including objectives, rubrics, design features, content and format. This position collaborates with subject matter experts, editors, web developers etc. on instructional design projects. This position also provides guidance, training and/or expertise to team members, industry partners, students, writers, faculty and/or management on tools and processes.

Job Description

What you will do

• Acts as the project manager for course development, including implementing and ensuring timelines, outlining course development plans and guiding the development process.


• Provides subject matter expertise and leadership regarding courses to be re-offered or developed, including objectives, rubrics, design features, content and format.


• Collaborates with subject matter experts, editors, web developers etc. on instructional design projects.


• Creates and monitors budgets.


• Provides guidance, training and/or expertise to team members, industry partners, students, writers, faculty and/or management on tools and processes.


• Collects and analyzes data, and makes recommendations for improvements to courses and/or to gauge course success rates.


• Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.

• Master's Degree or equivalent. In addition, requires a professional designation, certification, or other qualification, or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.
• in education preferred.

• More than 5 years of experience.
• Experience working at a post-secondary education institution considered an asset.


• Familiarity with online learning strategies considered an asset.


• Experience with learning management system functionalities and standards is considered an asset.


• Knowledge of eLearning standards and best practices as well as emerging learning technologies is considered an asset.


• Experience with rapid eLearning development tools or other applicable emerging learning technologies is considered an asset.


• Experience in planning and/or managing projects considered an asset.

• Knowledge of concepts and principles in a specialist field that is typically acquired through a combination of advanced professional or academic qualifications and/or significant work experience.


• Provide expert advice, guidance and consultation on highly complex issues and/or where the outcome may be contentious.


• Interaction with others requires highly developed interpersonal skills to effectively persuade, negotiate, counsel, and/or consult.


• Adapt messages to meet the different needs of different audiences.


• Prioritize and distribute work to deliver objectives on time and to the highest standard.


• Identify in advance when the intended results may not be achieved and develops a plan to address the gaps.


• Lead team and project meetings and develop team/unit and departmental project plans.


• Lead procedural or technological change within a unit or across broader university functions.


• Identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of work processes.


• Anticipate complex challenges to ensure activities are completed on time.


• Effectively leverage relevant data as input to making decisions.


• Appropriately assess risks before making a decision.


• Comprehensive understanding of what sexual violence, harassment and discrimination are, and their varying effects on diverse members of the community.


• Question and take appropriate steps to address attitudes, macroaggressions and other behaviours which are discriminatory. Acknowledges and respects diverse cultural traditions, abilities and beliefs.
