Over the past 20 years, the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa has become a national and global leader in many fields. We are the only law school to offer a common law degree in both English and French, and our faculty is one of the most accomplished in the country. We are an engaged Faculty, and we have a strong culture of public engagement. We also have a strong bond with the legal community in Ottawa and a special relationship with the Supreme Court of Canada. We are leaders -- leaders in research, leaders in the profession and leaders in our community. On any given day, members of our faculty may be seen testifying before a Parliamentary committee, providing expert commentary in the media, or contributing to public policy debates on the issues of the day. We are the most-cited law faculty in the national media. Through our dedication we have built strong experiential learning opportunities for our students where our students have unparalleled access to, and interaction with, the highest judges in the land to help foster an inclusive and high-quality student experience.

Position Purpose:

The Common Law Section has established an Experiential and Clinical Learning Hub (the ExCL Hub) to provide a pedagogical framework and operational infrastructure for supporting teaching, learning and supervision across all experiential and clinical entities, courses and programs. This position oversees the operation of the ExCL Hub, including planning, budgeting, fundraising, administration, resource creation, training, and supervision. The position may include teaching and supervision in relation to development of knowledge, skills and values in legal practice, dispute resolution and professional responsibility. The position must ensure that all experiential and clinical learning programs are undertaken in alignment with best practices in risk and practice management and relevant regulatory requirements, including those of the Law Society of Ontario and the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide expertise, leadership, and innovative practices to develop and enhance experiential and clinical learning opportunities in the Common Law Section, in French and English and in both the English and French Programs.

  • Manage the operation of the Experiential and Clinical Learning Hub (ExCL Hub) as an institutional framework and infrastructure for developing and supporting experiential and clinical learning opportunities in the Common Law Section, in French and English for both the English and French Programs.

  • Undertake strategic planning, budgeting and fundraising for the ExCL Hub.

  • Engage with professors and staff in the Common Law Section involved in experiential and clinical learning, in both the English and French Programs, to ensure a collaborative and coordinated approach.

  • Engage with professors and staff in other University of Ottawa faculties and programs involved in experiential and clinical learning to ensure appropriate alignment of activities and operations and to advance collaborative initiatives.

  • Cultivate strong professional relationships with legal practitioners and law-related organizations in the Ottawa francophone and anglophone legal communities and beyond to enable maintenance and development of experiential and clinical learning opportunities, with an orientation of access to justice.

  • Engage with the broader community of professors and legal professionals involved in experiential and clinical learning programs at other law faculties in Ontario, nationally and internationally, to develop and maintain knowledge of best practices and new developments in the field.

  • May teach up to three (3) credits per academic semester in the undergraduate program (JD) related to development of knowledge, skills and values in legal practice, dispute resolution and professional responsibility, as determined by the Vice-Dean of the English Program and Vice-Dean of the French Program.

  • Provide supervision, which may include legal, pedagogical and administrative supervision, to students engaged in clinical or experiential learning programs.

  • Develop, maintain, and ensure implementation of pedagogical frameworks and resources in French and English, as well as operational guidelines in alignment with relevant regulatory requirements and best practices in risk and practice management applicable in experiential and clinical learning contexts in the Common Law Section, in both the English and French Programs.

  • Ensure the development and maintenance of appropriate promotional and informational webpages and other sources for prospective and current students, as well as internal and external partners, in relation to availability and operation of experiential and clinical learning opportunities in the Common Law Section, in both the English and French Programs.
