Job Description:

Department Overview

TD's Global Physical Security (GPS) Crime Prevention Team supports the protection of colleagues, clients, and organizational assets across all TD enterprise-wide locations by implementing internal and external direction, providing advice and consultation on operational needs, and supporting TD's physical security programs.

Crime Prevention Specialist:

  • Assists TD employees and business groups, particularly within the retail environment, in understanding physical security and emergency response plans, as well as day-to-day GPS operations.
  • Focuses on training, emergency response, life safety and branch security.
  • Has frequent interaction with leadership representatives at the Business Group level, as well as peers within Physical Security, Retail, Enterprise Real Estate (ERE), ATM Channel, and Human Resources. This position may also deal directly with individuals in similar functions within external government, law enforcement, security, and emergency services organizations, as well as industry peers and general business security personnel at a similar level.
  • Crime Prevention Specialists are accessible, regionally based points of contact responsible for "Protecting the Bank" within their area of responsibility, while supporting peers as required throughout Canada.
  • Executes plans that support the protection of colleagues, clients, and organizational assets.
  • Provides internal business partners with observational or anecdotal data to support decision making.
  • Provides guidance on physical security procedures and standards, on an ad hoc or scheduled basis.
  • As required, represents GPS at internal or public events, either independently or in support of other GPS operational groups.

Job Description

This role is based in the Ottawa area, supporting the Quebec and Atlantic regions. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing plans, programs, procedures, and other support functions for GPS, serving as the field-level embodiment of GPS.

Operates independently while also contributing as a member of a skilled team of physical security professionals.

Attends TD locations through a schedule of proactive outreach to enhance understanding of, and commitment to, TD’s physical security program.

Supports Physical Security colleagues by implementing and following procedures and programs:

  • Prepares executive briefings, submits detailed reports, including robbery reports, and populates information in GPS's Incident Management database in response to assigned files.
  • Provide data for use in threat and risk assessments and physical security surveys.
  • Observe and report on the performance of all contractors for security services and facility security systems.

As assigned by GPS management, supports and assists in implementing security and emergency plans for:

  • Special events, such as the Annual General Meeting, Leaders Conference, and Reward & Recognition trips.
  • Branch relocations, reconfigurations, construction or renovation; and
  • Facility emergencies, such as fire or emergency evacuation, suspicious packages and bomb threats, workplace violence, demonstrations and occupations, personnel injury, and natural disasters.
  • Provide input into security consulting for:
  • Site layout of branch space, security system and hardware design for newly planned, constructed, or renovated facilities.
  • Vendor management, security guard services and deployment, contract development, maintenance, and vendor selection.
  • Facility security procedures.
  • Provides security support to Human Resources for employee terminations, harassment, or other employee situations where there may be a risk of workplace violence.
  • Develop and maintain effective liaison relationships, as appropriate for job functions, at field levels, with national/federal,regional/provincial/state and local/municipal law enforcement, intelligence and security agencies in all countries where TD operates.
  • Serve as assigned within GPS's Incident Management processes.

Job Requirements

  • Fully bilingual in English and French, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both languages.
  • Solid foundational knowledge of physical security principles and incident management.
  • Analytical ability to gather, assess, and present data from a physical security perspective.
  • Operational knowledge of Criminal Code, Provincial Statutes, Provincial Fire and Building Codes.
  • Maintains a good understanding of organizational strategic initiatives, priorities, and relationships.
  • Solid understanding of physical security systems, such as access control, CCTV, security lighting, and perimeter/interior intrusion detection.
  • Good understanding of governing plans, documents, procedures, and business administration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, organization, leadership and planning skills.
  • Availability and capability to take on duties in crisis and emergency incidents.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of ethics, diversity, equity and harassment in the workplace. 
  • Able to establish cooperative relationships and reinforce physical-security-related policies, procedures, and personal safety tips.
  • Understand the concept of physical security as a business-enabler first and as a control process second.
  • Self-starter, strategic thinker, negotiator, and consensus builder, with the ability to prioritize concurrent tasks.
  • Proficient computer skills.

Unique Requirements

  • Locally based in the Ottawa area.
  • Participates in a rotational on-call schedule and, when assigned, is on call 24/7 for a one-week period.
  • Ability to manage high-stress circumstances and fast-paced response requirements associated with crisis management and emergency response situations, including off-hours work assignments.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and have access to a vehicle.
  • Business travel throughout Canada/US periodically required.

Education & Experience

University degree or college diploma in security management, risk management, or business administration; comparable professional education or training in a field relevant to security management; or equivalent experience acceptable to the Leader, GPS.

Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a corporate or government security department within an organization of comparable size and complexity to TD. Leadership experience is considered an asset.

Professional designation in physical security, such as ASIS Physical Security Professional (PSP), or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Levels 1 and 2, would be considered an asset.

Professional designation in security management, such as ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP), CSIS Accredited Security Professional (ASP), or Certified Security Professional (CSP), is preferred.
