About this Role
Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager oversees the day-to-day accounting operations for Tartan Homes and directly supervises accounting staff. This role is responsible for accurate financial reporting, residential construction accounting, job costing, cash flow support, internal controls, and compliance activities.
The Accounting Manager works closely with Finance, Construction, Sales, Operations, Legal, external advisors, and other stakeholders to ensure project information, home closings, and related financial activity are properly supported and accounted for.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Support the Controller in managing day-to-day accounting activities, including review of staff-prepared working papers, account reconciliations, project accounting schedules, and other supporting documentation.
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial reporting schedules, account reconciliations, job cost reports, project cost variances, gross margin information, and other management reporting support for review by the Controller.
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end reporting processes, ensuring financial information is accurate, complete, and prepared on schedule.
- Act as backup to the Controller when required, supporting continuity of finance operations during absences and peak business periods.
- Assist the Controller with budgets, forecasts, cash flow analysis, working capital analysis, and other financial analysis required by leadership.
Project Financial Management
- Oversee residential construction project accounting, including job costing, budget tracking, cost-to-complete analysis, gross margin reporting, and review of development-related costs.
- Collaborate with Construction, Sales, and Operations teams to gather accurate and timely project data and support project-level reporting and reforecasting.
- Manage accounting support for home closings, including coordinating financial information for legal counsel, monitoring closing status, and reporting completed or delayed closings to management and the Controller.
- Monitor project costs and related balances, including building permit deposits, deferred development charges, utilities, property taxes, subcontractor payments, and other project-related accounts.
- Prepare or review related reconciliations, analysis, and supporting schedules to ensure project balances are complete and properly supported.
Cash Flow & Treasury Support
- Support cash flow forecasting and working capital analysis for Tartan Homes.
- Monitor expected cash receipts, home closing proceeds, project expenditures, subcontractor payments, utilities, property taxes, and other construction-related commitments.
- Prepare or review monthly bank and loan reconciliations, following up on discrepancies as required.
- Assist with lender reporting, financing-related schedules, and supporting documentation as directed by the Controller.
- Provide cash flow and liquidity information to support management decision-making.
Team Leadership & Development
- Manage and support direct reports, ensuring monthly duties and recurring responsibilities are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Provide coaching, feedback, and support for employee development, including performance evaluations, annual goal-setting, and development planning for direct reports.
- Participate in workforce planning, recruitment activities, onboarding, and cross-training initiatives to support team effectiveness and continuity of operations.
Controls & Compliance
- Monitor and support adherence to internal controls, accounting policies, company procedures, and applicable accounting standards, bringing forward control or process concerns to the Controller for review and direction.
- Support, participate in, and review the preparation of year-end review engagement files, working papers, and supporting schedules, liaising with the finance team, external accountants, and other stakeholders to help ensure deadlines are met.
- Prepare or support HST filings, T5018 subcontractor reporting, corporate tax return support, and other compliance-related schedules in collaboration with the Controller and external advisors.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance documentation, including proof of insurance and WSIB clearance certificates, and follow up on discrepancies or missing information as required.
- Maintain or review accounting records for fixed asset acquisitions, disposals, depreciation, and related reporting and reconciliations.
Improvements & Planning
- Identify and bring forward opportunities to improve day-to-day accounting functions, reporting efficiency, system use, process documentation, and team effectiveness; assist with implementation where approved by management.
- Support ERP and financial reporting system improvements, including enhancements related to Newstar or other accounting systems, as required.
- Support the annual insurance renewal process, including liability, office, vehicle, and builders’ risk coverage, and assist with claims support as required.
- Contribute to business planning, special projects, process changes, and other finance priorities as required.
- All other duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience; residential construction, homebuilding, real estate development, construction, or project-based accounting experience is an asset.
- Prior people management or supervision experience is required.
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline is required.
- CPA designation, or designation in process, is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, month-end close processes, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, job costing, project accounting, and internal controls.
- Experience supporting year-end review engagements and working with external accountants, lenders, legal counsel, or other external stakeholders is considered an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and in ERP or accounting systems. Experience with Newstar is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Prior experience in public accounting, and ability to prepare or review a complete set of financial statements in compliance with GAAP/ASPE, is a strong asset.
Physical/Sensory Effort and Work Environment
- Sitting or standing for long periods of time at a workstation. Manual dexterity is required to use a desktop computer and peripherals.
- Office-based role requiring extended periods of computer use and collaboration with finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- This role may require overtime at certain times of the year, including month-end, year-end, budgeting, and other peak business periods.

Salary Range
