Your New Role and Team
Sanctuary, a world leader in building AI-based control systems for humanoid robots, is seeking skilled Mechanical Build Technicians for a 6 month contract to help build robotic work cells for our customers. You'll work alongside our internal hardware and application engineering teams on the hands-on assembly, electrical fit-out, and testing of cell structures and subsystems, helping us deliver several customer systems on a tight timeline.
This is a great opportunity for a hands-on builder to get inside one of the most advanced Physical AI companies in the world and see their work go directly into customer deployments.
Our Success Criteria
Assemble robotic work cells and mechanical subassemblies from engineering drawings, BOMs, and work instructions, including frames, extrusion structures, guarding, fixtures, and mounting hardware
Perform precise fit-out, alignment, leveling, and fastening to specified tolerances and torque values
Install and route pneumatic lines, cable carriers, cable management, and basic components such as sensors, valves, and enclosures
Perform light fabrication and rework as needed, including drilling, tapping, cutting, and deburring
Support mechanical testing and checkout of completed cells and flag issues or drawing discrepancies to the engineering team
Keep build records, checklists, and redlines accurate and up to date
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
Your Experience
1+ years of hands-on mechanical assembly experience in machine building, industrial automation, manufacturing equipment, or a related field
Ability to read and work from mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, and BOMs
Comfortable with hand and power tools, precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, levels, dial indicators), and torque tools
Solid working knowledge of fasteners, fits, and mechanical assembly best practices
Available to start on short notice and commit to the full 6 month term
Additional Experience We Value
Experience building robotic cells, conveyors, or automated equipment
Trade certification or diploma in millwright/industrial mechanics, mechanical engineering technology, mechatronics, or equivalent experience
Familiarity with pneumatics and basic electromechanical components
Basic electrical skills such as wiring terminal blocks or panel assembly
Soldering experience for basic wire, connector, and small component work
Basic CAD skills (e.g., Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Onshape) to create simple brackets, fixtures, and mounts
Hands-on experience with 3D printing, including preparing files, running prints, and basic printer maintenance
First Aid, WHMIS, or other relevant safety certification
Traits
Strong execution focus with a drive to complete tasks efficiently and thoroughly
Proactive and positive attitude — takes initiative without waiting to be directed
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative engineering team
Adaptable in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
Willing to ask questions and seek clarification when needed
Observant and detail-oriented, with an eye for how the smaller things connect to the bigger picture
Strong problem-solving instincts and sound judgment in the field
Comfortable with physical work — willing to get on the ground, get their hands dirty, and do what the job requires
Able to work effectively in challenging or less-than-ideal environments
Skilled at organizing and routing cables neatly and methodically
Understands that this role extends well beyond desk-based work
What You Will Learn at Sanctuary
You will learn our robot architecture and interfaces, hand-mapping and kinematic-retargeting approaches, OpenXR and motion-capture systems, and how our data collection and policy-training pipelines support robots performing real-world tasks.
Working at Sanctuary

About Sanctuary
Founded in 2018, Sanctuary AI builds robots and a novel control system that integrates symbolic logic and reasoning with data-driven robot foundation models. We use our robots to collect vision, audio, touch and proprioception data from the perspective of the robot while they perform real-world work tasks. We use that data to train multimodal robot foundation models. Because our systems are vertically integrated, we can design, deploy and refine at scale. Our mission is to create the world's first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots.
