Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
Supports clients at The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope by maintaining a safe, respectful, and
welcoming environment. Responsibilities include client intake/discharge, support and advocacy,
documentation, security monitoring, and collaboration with Residential and Housing Support
Workers. Intake staff promote the Centre's mission through practical, emotional, and life skills to
support both within the facility and community.
KeyAccountabilities:
- Provide trauma-informed, person-centered support that promotes safety, dignity, choice, empowerment, and housing stability by:
- Supporting residents through admissions, intake, orientation, discharge, daily living needs, medication administration/distribution, mail, meals, advocacy, life-skills coaching, and referrals to community resources.
- Building positive, professional relationships with residents, staff, and community partners to support resident well-being, recovery, and housing goals.
- Maintaining a safe, secure, and respectful environment through building monitoring, security and room checks, emergency response, crisis intervention, conflict resolution,behavioralsupport, and enforcement of program guidelines.
- Operating security, communication, and emergency response systemsin accordance withorganizational policies and fire safety procedures.
- Completingaccurate,timely, and confidential documentation, case notes, reports, statistics, shift communications, and client records using assessment and case management systems (e.g., HIFIS, VI-SPDAT).
- Assistingresidents with incomeassistance, medical needs, documentation, and access to communitysupportsand services.
- Supporting facility operations bymaintainingclean, organized, and welcoming spaces; monitoring supplies; distributing donations and essential items; and reporting maintenance concerns.
- Maintaining organized workspaces, equipment, and operational records.
- Participating in team meetings, training, committees, quality improvement initiatives, and other assigned duties.
Working Conditions:

• Working environment is typically in the corps building ingenerally agreeableconditions and some outdoor duties.
• Some work over weekends and evenings may berequired.
• Ability tolift upto 30 lbs.
• May deal with upset people or challenging behaviors.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Diploma or certificate in Human Services, Social Services, Community Support, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Current NVCI, ASIST, Standard First Aid, and medication administration training are assets; successful candidates may be required to obtain and maintain these certifications within six months of hire.
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- One to three years of experience in supportive housing, homelessness services, shelter services, mental health, addictions, or a related community-based setting preferred.
- Knowledge of homelessness, supportive housing, mental health, substance use, harm reduction, crisis intervention, and community resources.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build respectful, professional relationships with individuals experiencing complex life circumstances.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, professional boundaries, equity, diversity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practice.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $18.30 to $22.87 with a maximum of $27.44.Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
