Veterinary Technician

JOB SUMMARY

Operational Support and Regulatory Services is responsible for new and amended by-law implementation support, technical support and administration for various municipal programs such as Private Parking Enforcement Agency Program, Noise Exemptions, Fire Route applications and Dog in Park Designation programs, business licensing technical support, Performance Measurement & Reporting to measure progress against work plans, administrative support of the Spay/Neuter Clinic and contract renewal for municipal animal shelter services, and Dispatch, Training & Logistics for training and certification of staff, procurement, business applications and by-law dispatch services.

You work with the Veterinarian and the Spay/Neuter Clinic Coordinator to provide surgical support to the Spay/Neuter Clinic. You are responsible for maintaining a sterile surgical environment, preparing anaesthetics, a high standard of pre- and post-operative patient animal care, monitoring related surgical supplies and equipment, maintaining compliance with College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) standards and the Health Disciplines Act (Pharmacy), and providing support to By-law Services’ commitment to excellence and quality care in the provision of animal spay and neuter services.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 2 year community college Veterinary Technician program

Minimum of 1 year of related experience

Completion of health and safety training required by legislation and by the Corporation of the City of Ottawa

Successful completion of exam plus annual continuing education (on-going)

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

KNOWLEDGE

• Proper care and handling of animals
• Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation and regulations of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO)
• General knowledge of City of Ottawa’s policies and procedures related to health and safety

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Deal with emergency situations within parameters specified by the Clinic Veterinarian and the College of Veterinarians of Ontario
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all job related contacts and the general public to properly complete all required forms, and to clearly and concisely present written and verbal information
• Respond to telephone inquiries for information respecting the Spay/Neuter Clinic (service fees, identification and immunization requirements, etc.), book appointments, complete admission forms, and file as required
• Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all City of Ottawa corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety
