Job Description – Facility Manager
Position Title: Facility Manager
Reports To: Centre Manager/Administrator/Principal
Length of Assignment: Full time / Until the project is done
Working Hours: Regular business hours, may be required to work after hours or weekends for
renovations or special assignment
Location: Various Locations
Status: Full time/Part time / Contract
Job Summary:
Facilities managers maintain the buildings and grounds of an organization, directing staff and
overseeing the upkeep of equipment and supplies. Facilities managers make sure the buildings and
grounds are maintained, which entails daily and weekly cleaning schedules as well as determining
and scheduling repairs, renovation projects, waste reduction improvements and safety inspections.
Facilities managers are in charge of a budget and must negotiate with outside vendors for supplies,
repairs and other measures. Facilities managers will have to demonstrate managerial experience
and abilities, as well as knowledge of purchasing, supplies, oversee grounds keeping, and
equipment repair, maintenance workers, and custodial staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilities managers are involved in both strategic planning and day-to-day operations,
particularly in relation to buildings and premises. Likely areas of responsibility include:
procurement and contract management;
building and grounds maintenance;
Supervising, scheduling cleaning staff;
Maintain heating and air conditioning systems, boilers, pumps, fan units, control panels,
thermostats, cooling towers, etc.
Maintain and/or have working knowledge of environmental safeguards and alarm
systems.
Maintain fire alarms, and extinguishers.
Maintain outside grounds (remove snow, ice, and debris, spray and remove weeds, sweep
health and safety;
security;
Detect faulty operations, and defective material, and report those and any unusual
situations to proper supervision.
Prepare, paint and decorate interior and exterior surfaces, as required.
Operate grounds-keeping power equipment and maintain external property.
Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
Travel within the GTA is required
Qualifications:
Must have 1-2 years of experience in event planning, customer service and managing
Must be able to work weekends.
Must be extremely detail-oriented and have an excellent work ethic.
Must be creative and possess excellent social skills.
Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and experience working with the
Internet.
Must have a desire to interact with children and families.
Must have outstanding written and interpersonal communication skills.
Must be able to work in a high-pressure environment.
Must be fluent in English.
Knowledge skills and abilities:
Analytical Skills: Facilities managers must look at a lot of different information and
make decisions based on needs and budget concerns.
Communication: Facilities managers talk to their employees, and work with
management to make sure the job gets done. Being able to clearly explain what needs to
be done will be necessary.
Attention to Detail: Quality control is a large part of a facilities manager's job.
Making sure cleaning, upkeep and safety standards are maintained, or efficiencies are
discovered, is key.
Leadership Skills: Facilities managers must motivate and coordinate employees, as
well as deal with any disciplinary issues that may come up.
Working hours and conditions:
You would work around 40 hours a week, usually 9am to5pm, but you may sometimes need to
do extra hours, for example to deal with emergencies.
You would be office-based but you would probably need to do some travelling, particularly if
you work for a large, multi-site company.
