Your Opportunity

Our Indirect Tax practice area is growing and we’re looking to find the right person to grow with it. This position will report directly to the Indirect Tax Advisor and truly has unlimited growth potential. Indirect tax is very niche area of taxation and is in no way your typical “accounting” job, we’re looking for an outlier and considering all relevant backgrounds.

Your experience in KRP’s Indirect Tax practice will start out with 4-6 weeks of direct training and mentorship, where we will begin with training to help familiarize you with basic accounting fundamentals, accounting software fundamentals, and income tax fundamentals, which create a foundation for your ability to work in indirect tax. Next you will receive detailed training in value-added tax and retail sales tax regimes, which will become your area of expertise as an indirect tax practitioner. After 4 to 6 weeks of this training, you will be ready start assisting with client-problems under the direct supervision of the Indirect Tax Advisor, and with the assistance of your team members who will help you get your feet moving.

Our clients include publicly-traded companies, non-profit organizations, charities, municipalities, financial institutions, oil and gas, First Nations, real estate developers, international importers, etc.

As you develop a deeper understanding of both income tax and indirect taxes, you will progress into supporting clients directly with preparing information for various tax authorities during audits and examinations, writing technical memoranda for complex taxation issues, reviewing plans for mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations for tax implications, risks and opportunities.

Your scope:

As part of your early development:

Accounting projects including preparation of financial statements;
Completing personal and corporate tax returns, income tax elections; and
GST/HST compliance filings such as filing registrations, elections, rebates and returns

Having a baseline understanding of the tasks above will help you move forward into more complex and client-facing services. As your technical knowledge progresses, your scope will expand into:

Researching specific tax topics and briefing your direct supervisor or internal staff on your findings as needed.

Preparing technical memoranda in full or smaller components of complex technical memoranda and other products to be delivered internally to the firm, or to clients.
Research and answer questions from internal accounting staff related to client tax issues.
Work with team members in other departments on projects such as financial statement audits to ensure tax issues are identified and the client is properly informed.

Assisting with a variety of other indirect tax projects as needed.

Your qualifications:

A college diploma in any subject is the only hard requirement to be considered for this role, while a baccalaureate degree in any subject would be considered an asset.
Previous experience in tax or accounting would be an asset, but we are willing to develop these technical skills in the right person. Please see below for the personal characteristics we are looking for.
Interest in completing the CPA program, or currently being enrolled, would be considered an asset.
Prior experience in professional service firms, law, accounting, finance, engineering, or any bookkeeping experience in any industry including but not limited to GST/HST, payroll, tax, would be an asset.
Prior experience at the Canada Revenue Agency or Canada Border Services Agency would be considered an asset.
Prior experience in real estate or financial services would be considered an asset.

Direct training in accounting and tax, internally at KRP
Participation in the firm’s formal 3-week orientation training
Enrolment in CPA Canada’s In-Depth GST/HST course, ideally in the first year but subject to CPA Canada’s enrolment windows
Enrolment in one of CPA Canada’s other In-Depth taxation programs such as the 3-year income tax program
Enrolment in the Certified Customs Specialist program with the Canadian Customs Broker Society
