JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated professional to join our transit team. Reporting directly to the Senior LRT Signals Engineer, you will provide engineering, technical, and administrative support for the management, maintenance, and capital upgrade of our LRT signal system infrastructure under the guidance and supervision of a Professional Engineer. In this role, you will be directly accountable to the citizens of Edmonton and surrounding communities to help deliver safe, reliable, and high-quality transit services.

Working under professional oversight, your responsibilities will include assisting with the development of asset management and maintenance documents, supporting capital budget tracking, drafting technical specifications, and assisting in incident and accident investigations related to the LRT signal system. Additionally, you will represent the signals perspective across departments, interacting with Traffic Operations, consultants, and contractors to support seamless, efficient, and safe transit operations.

What will you do?

  • Under the guidance of a Professional Engineer, initiate, design, and implement smaller-scale modifications or upgrades to enhance safety, reliability, or operational efficiencies
  • Draft testing and commissioning documentation for new or modified systems under professional supervision
  • Maintain a centralized record management system for signals documentation, drawings, software, and asset conditions
  • Support and maintain preventative maintenance programs for signals equipment to ensure infrastructure meets safety and operational targets
  • Coordinate and manage smaller-scale capital tasks, assist in reviewing proposals from consultants and city planners, and draft technical specifications and tender documents
  • Assist in managing approved capital funds for the signal system area, tracking project orders, and drafting monthly/year-end cost reports
  • Prepare draft technical reports, correspondence, and memoranda for senior management, LRT operations, regulatory agencies, and the general public
  • Participate in technical meetings and liaise with other transit agencies, consultants, and internal groups (such as Traffic Operations) to share industry best practices
Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics
  • Experience in railroad signal design, construction and maintenance
  • Membership with APEGA as Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and working towards a P.Eng is a requirement. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment

Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of LRT/train signal system design and maintenance systems
  • Strong written and verbal English communication and technical writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proficiency with Google Workspace

Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Conditions of employment:

  • Up to: 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $35.60 - $43.271 (Hourly)
