POSITION OVERVIEW

BDC Capital’s Industrial Innovation Venture Fund backs ambitious founders rebuilding the industrial economy. We invest in companies using software, hardware, AI, robotics, advanced materials, climate technologies, and deep tech to transform sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and resources. 

We are looking for an Investment Associate who wants to be close to the edge of industrial disruption: meeting exceptional founders, pressure-testing breakthrough technologies, mapping emerging markets, and helping Canadian companies scale into global category leaders. This is a highly analytical, founder-facing role for someone with curiosity, rigour, speed, and strong commercial judgment.

CHALLENGES TO BE MET

Source and Shape the Pipeline

• Build conviction on emerging industrial technology markets and identify companies before they are obvious
• Develop relationships with founders, investors, operators, researchers, and strategic partners across the ecosystem
• Maintain sharp market maps, sector theses, founder lists, and deal-tracking tools that help the fund move with speed and discipline

Evaluate Breakthrough Companies

• Assess startups across market size, product differentiation, customer value, go-to-market, team quality, business model, cap table, and exit potential
• Run diligence workstreams including customer calls, expert interviews, founder sessions, technical reviews, financial modeling, and investment memo preparation
• Turn complex technical and commercial inputs into clear, decision-ready investment recommendations

Support Portfolio Companies

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Your Background

• 4+ years of experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, consulting, corporate strategy, corporate development, a technology startup, or an industrial/technical operating role
• Strong analytical foundation, ideally supported by a degree in commerce, economics, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a related field
• Comfort with financial modeling, market research, customer discovery, technical diligence, and synthesizing ambiguity into clear recommendations

Your Edge

• You are intellectually curious and excited by hard industrial problems, technical founders, and markets where adoption is difficult but impact is massive
• You can engage confidently with founders, executives, investors, operators, customers, and technical experts
• You communicate crisply, write clearly, and can make complex technologies understandable to investment and executive audiences
• You are proactive, resourceful, low-ego, and energized by fast-moving, high-ambiguity environments
• Technical skills, operating experience in an industrial sector, and bilingualism in French and English are assets
