Building optical systems capable of supporting technology this advanced requires precision, deep technical understanding, and the ability to solve complex challenges in light, imaging, and system integration, and our students play an important role in helping bring these systems to life.
At Avalon, students are a vital part of our team and an important part of our long-term talent pipeline. We’re proud to provide meaningful opportunities that support both your learning and your career growth.
As an Optics Co-op Student, you’ll support the design, testing, and integration of optical systems that power our holographic displays. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with advanced imaging systems, optical components, and real-world hardware challenges in a fast-paced development environment.
What You’ll Do
Support the design and setup of optical systems and experimental configurations
Assist with alignment, calibration, and testing of optical components and assemblies
Conduct experiments and collect data to evaluate optical performance
Analyze results and contribute to improving system performance and image quality
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Mechanical, FPGA, Software and Systems.
Troubleshoot optical setups and support root cause analysis of system issues
Document test procedures, results, and technical findings
Contribute to ongoing development and optimization of advanced visualization systems
What We’re Looking For
Currently enrolled in Physics, Mathematics, Optical Engineering, or a related co-op post-secondary program.
Strong interest in optics, photonics, imaging systems, or applied physics.
Familiarity with optical components (lenses, mirrors, sensors) and basic lab equipment.
Naturally curious and motivated to research, explore, and figure things out independently.
Comfortable taking ownership of projects and running with ideas from concept through execution.
Confident working with direction but without requiring constant step-by-step instruction.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to document technical workflows and communicate findings clearly.
Collaborative mindset with a willingness to take initiative.
Why Join Avalon?
Get meaningful experience supporting groundbreaking technology that pushes beyond what’s been done before, with mentorship, collaboration, and opportunities to take ownership of your work.
If you're excited about working with advanced optical systems and want to help build technology that brings real-time 3D visualization to life, apply today with your resume and transcripts! Please note that your application won’t be considered complete without both documents.
