The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from western and northern Canada. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized adult services within cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, orthopedics, renal, critical care, burns, transplant and trauma inpatient programs as well as, a vast number of ambulatory clinics. Our promise is “Extraordinary Care, Exceptional Caring.” This position contributes to the care of patients in the medicine program which consists of 14, 18+ bed units and includes many specialized services. The program utilizes a collaborative care model (COACT) including team nursing for patient care and Connect Care for the patient's electronic medical record. The program has a team of CNEs and CNS to support new hire orientation, training in specialized areas and ongoing professional development and initiatives. We strive to utilize evidence-based practice and quality improvement principles to improve patient and family experiences and outcomes.

Description:

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, this Unit Manager position is primarily assigned to Unit 5C4. However, the successful candidate will also be deployed throughout the Medicine Program to provide leadership coverage during Unit Manager absences and to support special projects as required. This position works collaboratively with other Unit Managers in Medicine and functions within a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The Unit Manager is accountable for the effective utilization of human and fiscal resources, ensuring the maintenance of unit standards and the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care in alignment with AHS values. As a frontline leader, this role also supports the professional development of staff and self through mentorship, coaching, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Formal leadership or management experience and change management training. Minimum 3–5 years of experience in medicine. Minimum 2 years of Charge Nurse experience. Hematology experience is an asset. Community Case Manager experience is an asset. Connect Care training is preferred.
