Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director, Financial Reporting provides strategic leadership and oversight of Alberta Health Services' financial reporting function. The Director is accountable for ensuring the timely, accurate, and transparent delivery of all internal and external financial reporting, including annual audited financial statements, monthly and quarterly financial reports, management reporting, and statutory and regulatory submissions.
This role leads a high-performing team of financial reporting professionals and works collaboratively with Alberta Health Services Executive Leadership, Acute Care Alberta (ACA), Health Shared Services (HSS), government ministries, auditors, and other key stakeholders. The Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining financial reporting frameworks, governance, and internal controls that ensure compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), provincial legislation, Treasury Board directives, and other regulatory requirements. The position provides expert leadership on complex accounting and financial reporting matters, supports strategic decision-making through high-quality financial information, and ensures the organization meets its accountability and stewardship obligations. As a senior finance leader, the Director fosters a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, innovation, and accountability while providing leadership, direction, and mentorship to managers and staff. The role plays a critical part in advancing organizational objectives through the delivery of reliable financial information, effective stakeholder partnerships, and strong financial governance.
A minimum of a post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Mathematics, Economics, or a related discipline. Professional accounting designation (i.e. CPA), or master's degree or equivalent. Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, and other related finance disciplines. Thorough understanding and working knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards, financial reporting requirements, internal controls, and audit and compliance practices. Experience providing strategic financial advice, analysis, and recommendations to senior leaders and executive stakeholders.
Proven leadership experience, including staff supervision, coaching, and professional development. Strong analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically and systematically, aligning financial plans and decisions with organizational priorities. Ability to plan and prioritize work, allocate resources, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines in a complex environment. Experience leading or supporting projects, process improvements, or change initiatives. Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences. Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and work effectively with internal teams, senior leaders, auditors, government ministries, and other stakeholders. Broad knowledge of finance processes and practices. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word, and experience with financial systems and reporting tools.
Financial experience in a Health Care Environment. Experience in performing complex audits. Equivalences of education, experience and skills may be considered.
