Senior Analyst

Role Responsibilities

Drive demographic insights that inform Alberta's future. As a Senior Analyst with the Office of Statistics and Information, you will lead the development of population estimates, projections, and socio-demographic analysis that support government planning, fiscal forecasting, funding allocations, and policy decisions across the province. Working with a high degree of independence, you will apply advanced demographic and analytical expertise, represent Alberta on national statistical committees, and provide trusted advice to decision-makers within Treasury Board and Finance, other ministries, and external partners.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop sound and timely population estimates, forecasts/projections and other demographic statistics to meet the fiscal, economic and policy planning needs of the GoA.
• Produce population estimates, forecasts, projections and other demographic deliverables that support government economic forecasting, fiscal planning and policy development.
• Synthesize information from multiple sources and consult with subject matter experts to develop population forecasting assumptions.
• Evaluate results and methodologies to ensure Alberta's official population statistics are maintained at the highest standard.
• Use innovative analytical methods and data sources to develop new socio-economic analyses and statistics that support evolving government priorities.
• Initiate, develop and complete socio-economic and demographic analyses to support fiscal and policy planning initiatives across government.
• Develop reports, visualizations and presentations and provide expert advice on the appropriate use and limitations of demographic and social data.
• Collaborate with Statistics Canada and represent Alberta's interests through participation in demographic methods workshops and Federal-Provincial-Territorial committees.
• Lead and manage projects, coordinate stakeholders, and ensure deliverables are completed under tight timelines.

Qualifications

University graduation in social sciences (i.e. demography, sociology, economics, statistics) plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
  
  

Required:

• Experience applying demographic theory, methodologies, and population forecasting models.
• Experience conducting socio-economic and demographic analysis using quantitative and qualitative methods.
• Experience working with demographic and socio-economic data sources.
• Experience applying statistical and methodological techniques to analyze data and evaluate results.
• Experience using statistical programming languages (e.g. SAS, Python, R) to analyze large datasets, build statistical models, and automate tasks.

Assets:

• Knowledge of current social, economic and demographic trends, and their influence on Alberta.
• Experience developing reports and data visualizations to communicate demographic and statistical information.
• Experience initiating, developing and completing research projects.
• Experience leading or coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Location is downtown Edmonton.

Candidates may be required to complete a written exercise as part of the assessment process prior to being selected for an interview.
