Role Responsibilities

The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office is seeking a provincial prosecutor to join a dynamic team responsible for prosecuting provincial statute offences across Alberta. In this role, you will represent the public interest in the Alberta Court of Justice, assess and prepare prosecution files, conduct court proceedings, and help ensure matters are resolved fairly, effectively, and in accordance with the law.

This position involves work that ranges from routine provincial offence matters to complex and technical prosecutions. You will exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced, adversarial environment while working closely with law enforcement, defence counsel, agents, self-represented defendants, victims, witnesses, and other justice system participants.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Representing the Attorney General in Alberta Court of Justice proceedings, including trials, pre-trial conferences, sentencing hearings, and related appearances.
• Reviewing and screening files involving adult and youth defendants by assessing evidence, charge appropriateness, public interest considerations, and the reasonable likelihood of conviction.
• Communicating the Crown’s position and negotiating appropriate resolutions with defence counsel, agents, and self-represented defendants, including through the Traffic Ticket Digital Service.
• Preparing for court by analyzing legal and factual issues, organizing evidence, identifying and preparing witnesses, and drafting oral and written submissions.
• Responding to disclosure requests.
• Contributing to the continuous improvement of provincial offence prosecution procedures, guidelines, and practices.

Qualifications

Requirements:

• University graduation in Criminology, Law, Public Administration, Social Sciences or another related discipline.
• Four years of progressively responsible related experience working within the justice system, such as experience as a paralegal, in policing, or in provincial prosecution.
• A valid Class 5 driver’s licence, or equivalent.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

For example, a two-year diploma in law enforcement or another related discipline, and six years of progressively responsible related experience.

Assets:

• Knowledge of provincial statutes and regulations, including the Provincial Offences Procedure Act, Traffic Safety Act, Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and related legislation.
• Understanding of court procedures, rules of evidence, advocacy principles, disclosure obligations, and legal terminology.
• Experience using, or knowledge of, justice information systems and digital platforms such as JOIN, MOVES, TTDS, ROADS, and standard office software including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Notes

• There is one permanent full-time position and one temporary full-time position available until September 30, 2027. Additional positions may be filled from this competition.
• This position will work 36.25 hours per week.
• This position works out of the John E. Brownlee Building in Edmonton. Travel to regional circuit points will be required.
