Historical Interpreter

Role Responsibilities

Bring Alberta’s history to life while creating memorable experiences for visitors from around the world.

As a Historical Interpreter at Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site, you will combine storytelling, customer service, and public engagement to connect visitors with Alberta’s rich history. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will deliver engaging programs, provide exceptional visitor experiences, and help foster a deeper appreciation for our province’s heritage.

You will be responsible for:

• Delivering engaging historical interpretation and programming for visitors of all ages.
• Providing exceptional front-line customer service and visitor experiences.
• Sharing knowledge of the Rutherford family, Edmonton, and Alberta history through storytelling and interactive engagement.
• Supporting special events, facility rentals, and public programs.
• Assisting with the development and enhancement of interpretive programs and visitor experiences.
• Conducting historical research and contributing to educational content and outreach initiatives.
• Promoting the site through public engagement, social media, and community interaction.
• Collaborating with team members to support daily site operations and visitor services.

Qualifications

Required:

• High School Diploma.

Preference may be given to candidates with Post–secondary education and or/experience in the following fields: Historical Interpretation, Education, Canadian History, Language Arts, Dramatic and Performing Arts, Marketing and/or Recreation Administration.

Must-Haves:

• Ability to provide proof of First Aid certification prior to employment. 
• Ability to obtain and maintain ProServe certification prior to employment. 
• Ability to successfully complete a Vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment. 
• Availability to work evenings and weekends. 
• Strong interest in history, heritage, public education, and visitor engagement. 
• Ability to deliver engaging presentations and interact confidently with diverse audiences. 
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. 
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Notes

Additional Position Details:

• Term of Employment: Temporary up to March 31, 2027 - Wage.
• Hours of Work: Up to 36.25 hours per week, including evening and weekends.
• Location: Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site - Edmonton.
• Weekend Shift Premiums/Shift Differential:Shift differential. 

Recruitment Process:

• Assessments: Candidates may be required to complete an assessment to further evaluate their skills, knowledge, and experience related to the role.
• Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC) including a vulnerable sector check (VS).
• Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.

• You'll receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave:
