Geomatics Technologist

Role Responsibilities

The Government of Alberta's Ministry of Forestry and Parks is seeking a Geomatics Technologist to support regulatory approvals and land use planning under the Public Lands Act, Provincial Parks Act, and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.

In this role, you will deliver expert geospatial analysis, manage complex spatial databases, and design efficient data pipelines to provide timely, high-quality insights. Your work will directly support day-to-day operations as well as urgent, high-stakes inquiries,contributing to sound, defensible regulatory decisions and enhancing transparency across programs.

Responsibilities include:

•    Designing, maintaining, and optimizing spatial databases to support both operational needs and executive-level decision-making.
•    Developing and managing ETL workflows to transform spatial and non-spatial data from multiple sources into actionable intelligence.
•    Creating dynamic dashboards, maps, and reports that deliver real-time insights into land disposition activities and program performance.
•    Conducting rapid geospatial analysis to address time-sensitive inquiries from executives, auditors, and the public.
•    Identifying and resolving data quality issues, spatial misalignments, and information gaps impacting regulatory approvals and land mapping.
•    Providing mentorship, training, and documentation to strengthen GIS capacity and spatial literacy across the branch.
•    Collaborating with cross-ministry teams to ensure data systems align with evolving policy directions and legislative requirements.
•    Engaging with external stakeholders including industry partners and Indigenous communities to enhance data submissions and support transparent regulatory processes.

Qualifications

•    Completed a two-year technical diploma in a related field such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Applications, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Forestry, or Geospatial Sciences; or possess an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Minimum of two years of related experience, preferably augmented by ESRI software certification.

Assets

•    Experience representing data for diverse audiences, with familiarity in industry sectors such as oil and gas, forestry, electric power systems, telecommunications, and designated industrial property (e.g., machinery, equipment, railway, farmland, buildings, land).
•    Training or certification in tools and technologies including Safe Software FME, ESRI ArcGIS, R, Python 3, machine learning for classification, AI-enhanced coding productivity, and project management.
•    Proven expertise in designing, maintaining, and optimizing spatial databases, as well as developing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows to transform spatial and non-spatial data into actionable intelligence for operational and executive use.
•    Skilled in creating interactive dashboards, maps, and real-time reports that provide insights into land disposition activities, coupled with the ability to deliver rapid geospatial analysis for time-sensitive inquiries from executives, auditors, and the public.
•    Demonstrated success in identifying and resolving data quality issues, spatial misalignments, and regulatory data gaps, alongside a strong commitment to capacity building through mentorship, training, and documentation to enhance GIS literacy across teams.
•    Effective collaborator with experience in cross-ministry coordination and stakeholder engagement, ensuring alignment of data systems with evolving policies and legislative requirements.

Hours of Work

•    7.25 daily hours
•    36.25 weekly hours
•    8:15AM to 4:30PM (Monday to Friday)
