Role Responsibilities

We are seeking multiple dedicated Child & Youth Care Counsellors to join our team. These positions are reporting to the Child & Youth Care Team Lead. In this role, you will provide direct care, meet the support and wellbeing needs of extremely emotionally and behaviorally challenged youth within a trauma informed environment. The Child & Youth Care Counsellor is a member of a multi-disciplinary team that is primarily responsible for providing direct services that ensure a safe and secure environment, and social milieu that assesses, identifies and implements the specific needs and direct program delivery for vulnerable youth in care, who are receiving Child Intervention services via the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and/or Protecting Sexually Exploited Children's Act. The Child & Youth Care Counsellor works directly with youth, their families and as a member of the multi-disciplinary team. 


As a primary care provider, these positions are relied on to ensure that the individual youth's needs are identified and that approved plans are implemented and evaluated to determine achievement goals. The Child and Youth Care Counsellor provides input to the multi-disciplinary team based on observations and direct interaction with the child.  Ensuring a safe and secure trauma informed environment consistent with the centre philosophy and policies. Positions in this class may work in either an open or secure environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards:
 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Child and Youth Care or related Human Service Profession

 
Related Education (either Diploma or Degree):
 

  • Human Service Worker, Child & Youth Care, Social Work, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Correctional or Police Services, Psychology, Sociology, and Education. 
  • There are no equivalencies for Child and Youth care Worker 1. Candidates must possess, at minimum, a diploma in one of the previously listed educational areas. 
  • If you hold a Bachelors or Masters degree in Social Work, you will be required to be registered through Alberta college of Social Workers ( ACSW).

 

The ideal candidate will possess:

 

  • A Full, Non-GDL Class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge in being trauma informed and relevant best practices in campus based or residential settings.
  • Principles in Behavior management and De-escalation techniques, Relational practices, Systems theory, Ecological approaches, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention.
  • Knowledge in Developmental, Trauma related and Mental Health disorders and disabilities affecting youth such as FASD, ODD, OCD, depression, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, pervasive personality, suicidal ideation, Autism, and substance addictions.
  • Experience with issues related to youth development such as Self Esteem, Gender Diversity, Identity Crisis/Confusion, Peer Pressure, Bullying.

 
Assets:
 

  • Knowledge in Child/Adolescent development theories including social learning, moral development, cognitive development, attachment, resiliency, strengths-based competency models, and Change Models.
  • Experience with related acts including the Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFE) and Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act (PSECA).
  • Knowledge of appropriate legislation and policy such as CYFEA handbook, Accreditation Standards, Regional policy and procedures, PSECA protocol for police services, Public Health Act and the PCBC Policy and Procedures Manual.
  • Awareness of Indigenous and/or other Cultural differences and how they impact approaches for youth.
  • Experience with assessment tools and program planning, Community resources, Safety, and security measures.
  • Familiarity with Mental Health Act, School Act, Freedom of information and Privacy Act (FOIP), Young Offenders Protocol (Youth Criminal Justice Act), OHSA.

Technical Skills

Related experience in therapeutic campus-based care setting, working with indigenous populations, working in youth homes, teacher, educational assistant, crisis intervention, family counselling, youth counselling, youth correction work, childcare program development (Teacher, Educational Assistant, Psychologist) and behavioral therapy.

  • Current Certification in First Aid with CPR and Suicide Intervention
