Job Description

AECOM is looking for an Environmental Manager, for its Markham, ON location to lead environmental remedial projects, grow our business, and to develop the technical team to support delivery. This is a full-time role. 

Job Summary:  

We are looking for an Environmental Manager, to support project delivery, business development, and people management locally in Ontario and across Canada. Your role will incorporate technical, operational, people management, and leadership responsibilities as needed by the business and appropriate to your ambitions and capabilities.

As Title TBC you will have the opportunity to lead consequential and innovative projects and to work with our clients and project managers to help set the strategic direction for multidisciplinary project teams.

The role will focus on delivery of projects for industrial and manufacturing clients and will include responsibility for business growth and team development. It is expected to expand and include various operational, management, and leadership responsibilities, as needed by the business and appropriate to the individual. 

There will be opportunities to continue to build your people management, leadership and technical skills through training and careers opportunities and through collaborating with senior technical experts from across AECOM’s international technical practice network. 

This position is ideally suited to a Senior Environmental Project Manager with proven technical and project management strengths who is ready for the next stage of their career.

This position requires excellent written and spoken communication skills, organizational and time management skills, flexibility to work on a range of projects, and a positive can-do attitude. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively with members of the project team, clients, site personnel and management, and have the ability to work both independently and as a part of a project team. 
 
The successful candidate will rigorously apply safety, quality, and ethics policies and procedures and will effectively manage the quality of field efforts and project deliverables within the bounds of the AECOM Quality Management System. 

Major Responsibilities:  

You will be joining a market-leading, experienced team and will be given the following responsibilities: 

  • Project Leadership: Provide leadership and project management expertise on environmental assessment and remediation projects. As part of the leadership team, engage with clients to understand their needs and to direct AECOM’s business. Provide direction to diverse teams on frameworks and major projects to support the successful delivery of projects to budget and programme. Act as the client’s leading advocate within AECOM; and AECOM’s leading advocate with the client.

  • Commercial & Technical Support: Develop strategic proposals and budgets for new opportunities. Provide commercial awareness with regards to project delivery with an understanding of technical risks and how to manage these to offer value to clients and AECOM.

  • Bid Support: Support technical development of bids including delivery of growth through the identification of opportunities and successfully leading major project bids. Overseeing deliverables and implementing quality and health and safety principles.

  • Governance: Act as lead verifier (in accordance with AECOM’s quality assurance process) on major projects and programmes providing technical direction on solutions ensuring these meet clients brief and expectations with risks adequately managed. Be able to lead large and complex projects including projects with significant commercial risks. 

  • People Management: Provide mentoring to more junior staff supporting their technical development in project delivery and in appreciation of risks including how to manage and eliminate these on projects. Be able to lead a team of technical experts and environmental professionals. Lead with empathy, respect and understanding, actively seeking out diverse points of view. Provide all employees the freedom they need to grow, develop, innovate and be their whole selves at work. 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s or Postgraduate Degree in a relevant discipline (Geotechnical, Geology, Environmental Engineering, etc.). and 8 years of experience in the field.

  • Experience with contaminated sites in Ontario and deep understanding of the applicable Ontario regulations and protocols. 

  • Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Registered, or have the ability to register as a P.Eng. or P.Geo in Ontario. 

  • Fifteen years of directly relevant related experience within the environmental and remedial fields.

  • Experience servicing industrial and manufacturing clients on project delivery. 

  • Proposal writing, job scoping, project plans. 

  • Client management skills. 

  • Willingness to travel to job sites (sometimes remote) on occasion. 

  • Working in a team setting to meet timelines and quality management. 

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite; excellent knowledge of Excel and Word.
