26-61 Senior Business Intelligence Analyst (10 Months)

The Opportunity

Supports the Leader in the strategy and operation of Technical Safety BC’s business intelligence program supporting driving operational efficiencies and measurement of organizational strategy implementation.  Provides an advanced level of expertise in business intelligence to develop and deliver data and information products for internal and external customers and stakeholders.  Independently carries out complex needs assessment, identifies opportunities to optimize use of data and information extracted from internal and external sources, and determines optimal methods to deliver resulting products to meet business needs.  Provides day-to-day technical guidance to the Business Intelligence Analyst.

Reports to: Leader, Business Intelligence

As a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst, you will:

1. Applies an advanced level of expertise in the strategy and operation of Technical Safety BC’s business intelligence program. Provides input to development of corporate strategies to influence change through data, information and knowledge, and participates in implementation and delivery.
2. Identifies information needs, including situations where clients cannot clearly articulate the need, available solutions fall short, and data is of lower quality. Designs, develops, and delivers complex data and information products that are scalable and accessible to internal and external customers through standard or unique reports and self-serve methods.
3. Leads and participates in data initiatives that are strictly speaking outside of Business Intelligence, including data definition, data modelling, data quality, information management, and records management.
4. Applies an advanced level of expertise in experimental design, applying creativity and exploring innovative solutions to address client-specific needs. Tests information products, evaluates findings, and redesigns as necessary to deliver required outcomes. Educates end users at senior levels of the organization on the proper use of BI products.
5. Supports the Leader in developing a framework of processes, practices and standards to ensure all product development and information sharing is executed with cost-effective, timely, and operationally efficient results. Develops ethical standards on the use of information within the organization. Fosters transparency and ready-access to information, while also establishing the necessary controls to mitigate risks.
6. Collaborates with the Information Technology and Data Management departments in identifying optimal solutions and delivering information services throughout the organization. Negotiates solutions and scheduling with IT/DM departments while maintaining excellent relationships with the IT/DM departments.
7. Collaborates with leaders to assess and advise on business intelligence needs, and determines optimal methods and products to support achievement of business objectives. Manages internal expectations and takes action to find common ground for differing agendas and conflicting objectives. Assesses and prioritizes day-to-day requests, applying judgement in the context of organization-wide requirements.
8. Collaborates with the Leader in providing communication and advice that encourages client behavioural change through use of data and information products. Appropriately addresses use of data and information that does not meet BCSA security, privacy, or ethical standards, with escalation to Leader or Director as necessary.
9. Supports the Leader in development of reports, presentations and business cases in support of business intelligence program initiatives.
10. Proactively resolves complex program issues and challenges (e.g. Operations), referring only the unresolved, escalated situations to the Leader for direction.
11. Conducts research and continuously maintains knowledge and awareness of the business intelligence practices, methods and related industry trends.
12. Provides day-to-day technical guidance to the Business Intelligence Analyst.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have:

Education and Experience

The required knowledge and skills for the position would typically be acquired through a Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or other related discipline and 6 - 8 years of experience in business intelligence in a measurement-intense environment, including experience working within IT teams in the delivery of BI solutions.

Achievement of (or eligible for) a relevant professional designation is also required.

• Advanced practical knowledge of business intelligence concepts and solutions, use of external data, publishing open data, client-specific offerings, report and self-serve methods
• Advanced ability to understand and transform user information needs into visually well-designed business intelligence products
• Advanced understanding and application of experimental design, combined with creativity and curiosity to explore innovative solutions (evidenced by portfolio)
• Advanced and diverse experience in implementing, deploying, and operating BI technology stacks.
• Solid business acumen and ethics to assess business intelligence requirements and priorities in the context of differing agendas or conflicting objectives
• Advanced understanding of IT systems, databases, and data management including data quality
• Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to engage in collaborative dialogue with internal and external customers/stakeholders, establish common ground, and influence change
• Solid planning skills to support the Leader in day-to-day operation of the business intelligence program.
• Advanced analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to identify and take action to assess needs, address challenges, and manage change
• Basic leadership skills to provide day-to-day technical guidance
