The Opportunity

Our internship opportunity allows you to explore your career path by providing hands-on experience in both the field and office. We connect you with industry-leading mentors and a cohort of top-tier students from across Canada. We are hiring for a 4, or 8 month internship in January 2027 for our Transportation and Urban Transportation divisions in the Vancouver Engineering branch.

Our interns work with multidisciplinary engineering teams to apply their academic knowledge and assist with project delivery from design to construction. Whether it’s developing drawings or conducting site inspections, you’ll gain the skills and training needed to solve real-world problems.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with our Engineers and Project Managers to develop designs from conceptual to detailed stages, working with and across a range of disciplines and using industry-standard software packages such as Civil3D.
  • Conduct field inspections during and before construction activities and coordinate between design, construction, and owner teams
  • Work with the team to deliver projects on-schedule and on- budgets, while meeting and exceeding our quality control, and safety standards.
  • Gain exposure to various McElhanney services, including materials testing, construction management, municipal infrastructure, transportation, water resources, geotechnical, bridge, and structural engineering.
  • Participate in McElhanney’s industry-leading safety practices to exceed client needs while ensuring our teams Think Safe, Work Safe, and Get Home Safe.


Practice Areas You’ll Focus On

Depending on project needs, team priorities, and your area of interest, you may gain exposure to a variety of practice areas through hands-on work, project support, field experience, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. This could include work such as:

  • Transportation Engineering: Supporting the planning, design, and delivery of transportation infrastructure such as highways, urban corridors, neighborhood greenways, busways, and airport-related projects.
  • Active Transportation: Contributing to projects that improve safety, comfort, and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists at intersections, along roadways, and within broader community networks.
  • Transit: Assisting with the design and coordination of transit infrastructure, including bus stops, exchanges, and dedicated transit spaces along existing corridors.
  • Placemaking: Collaborating with landscape architects and other professionals on public spaces such as plazas, parks, streetscapes, and community-focused urban environments.
  • Construction Services: Gaining field experience through construction support, field reviews, contractor coordination, contract administration tasks, and other project delivery activities.

What You’ll Bring

  • Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Civil Engineering.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D or related software is an asset.
  • Previous work experience in Civil Engineering or Construction is an asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail, sound judgment, and clear communication skills.
  • Willing to work in varied environmental conditions, wildlife populated areas, and  in remote areas for extended periods and varied hours.
  • Available for 4, or 8-month internship starting in Winter or Summer 2027.
  • Commutable distance to Vancouver office and available for full-time in-office work.

The salary range for this position is $23-$32 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
