Your Opportunity

Help shape the future of energy. Join Capital Power as our Senior Lead, Interconnections & Transmission Engineer, where you will provide specialized technical and commercial expertise to support the successful interconnection of power generation projects. You will evaluate transmission options, coordinate interconnection studies, advise project teams, and build productive relationships with utilities, transmission providers, and system operators while navigating evolving regulatory, ISO/RTO, transmission, and compliance requirements. It provides leadership throughout the asset lifecycle, from acquisition or development through operation and enhancement, expansion and uprate strategies.
You’ll contribute to our team by:
- Evaluating transmission and interconnection options and recommending solutions that support project cost, schedule, reliability, and risk objectives.
- Serving as the technical lead or subject matter expert for assigned interconnection applications, studies, and related workstreams.
- Coordinating interconnection studies from application development and submission through review, approval, and implementation.
- Reviewing power flow, transient stability, short-circuit, electromagnetic transient, reliability, inverter- based risk assessments, and other technical studies.
- Assessing transmission topology, system constraints, supply and demand conditions, interconnection queues, and potential curtailment risks.
- Providing technical input into interconnection agreements, cost estimates, schedules, and negotiations.
- Serving as a key technical contact with transmission owners, system operators, regional transmission organizations, utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Identifying interconnection and transmission risks and opportunities and presenting clear recommendations to project teams and business leaders.
- Supporting the resolution of technical, contractual, regulatory, and system access issues.
- Coordinating interconnection-related technical matters during design and construction, working across engineering, construction, development, commercial, and regulatory teams.
- Monitoring evolving technical aspects of transmission regulations, policies, market developments, and interconnection requirements and assessing their potential business impact.
- Providing technical input to Regulatory and other internal subject matter experts on matters affecting development and operating projects.
- Supporting compliance with applicable interconnection agreements, transmission requirements, and system access obligations.
- Providing technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and informal mentorship to colleagues.
- Support technical due diligence for acquisitions, divestitures, and development opportunities by evaluating transmission access, congestion risk, interconnection status, and upgrade exposure.
What you will bring to the role:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or related field.
Experience:
- Minimum six years of progressively responsible experience in transmission planning, generation interconnections, power system studies, or a related technical field.
- Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating complex transmission and interconnection studies from initial assessment through approval and implementation.
- Experience evaluating transmission constraints, interconnection costs, schedules, risks, and mitigation options.
- Strong knowledge of applicable reliability standards, regulatory requirements, market rules, and interconnection procedures.
- Experience developing technical recommendations and communicating complex information to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with utilities, transmission providers, system operators, consultants, and cross-functional project teams.
- Experience providing technical guidance, knowledge sharing, or informal mentorship is considered an asset.
Technical Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of transmission planning and interconnection studies, including:
- Power flow analysis
- Transient stability studies
- Short circuit analysis
- Electromagnetic transient studies
- Reliability assessments
- Economic dispatch studies
- Expertise in transmission system planning methodologies and technologies.
- Strong understanding of NERC, FERC, RTO, and other applicable industry standards and criteria.
- Ability to develop innovative system plans, equipment applications, and technical solutions that meet regulatory and reliability requirements.
- Knowledge of electrical power generation, transmission systems, and transmission path analysis.
- Strong understanding of electrical engineering concepts, practices, codes, and procedures applicable to utility and energy infrastructure projects.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid office/work-from-home position based in Edmonton or Calgary, Alberta.
- Periodic travel throughout North America will be required to support operational, maintenance, and project activities across Capital Power's generation fleet.
