With offices across Canada, our expertise in sustainable design and technical innovation drives impactful projects from coast to coast. Joining BPA means putting your talent to work on meaningful projects, collaborating with recognized experts, and growing in a flexible, people-focused and forward-thinking environment.
The opportunity
BPA is seeking an experienced Existing Building Performance Lead to deliver projects that improve the energy efficiency, carbon performance and operation of existing buildings. Based in Toronto within the Building Performance team in Sustainability, you will lead decarbonization studies, energy audits, enhanced building condition assessments, smart metering, and measurement and verification projects.
This is primarily a billable technical and project delivery role. You will work with building performance analysts and energy modellers, existing building engineers, Building Science and BAS specialists to turn findings into practical operating improvements and capital projects. You will also help develop the team and coordinate BPA’s proposed Toronto Existing Buildings Working Group and Retrofit Accelerator initiative.
Project delivery responsibilities
- Lead projects from proposal and site investigation through analysis, reporting, implementation support and performance verification. Manage scope, fees, schedules, staffing, risks and additional services.
- Direct energy audits and decarbonization studies. Assess utility and interval data, benchmark performance, develop energy balances, and evaluate energy conservation and greenhouse gas reduction measures.
- Develop practical retrofit options, including electrification, heat recovery, HVAC renewal and controls optimization. Work with specialists to assess electrical capacity, envelope opportunities, equipment loading and occupied-building constraints.
- Support existing building commissioning and recommissioning activities as required working alongside the BPA commissioning team.
- Develop metering and M&V plans, including submetering and shadow metering strategies. Establish baselines, normalization and reporting methods, assess data quality and verify savings using appropriate methods.
- Coordinate energy modelling and technical analysis, review assumptions and results, and translate findings into clear recommendations, cost estimates and capital renewal priorities.
- Lead or coordinate enhanced building condition assessments. Integrate condition, remaining service life, energy performance and implementation dependencies into capital plans.
- Support incentive applications and technical submissions, including required documentation and verification. Coordinate engineering design, tender support, commissioning and ongoing performance services with the relevant BPA teams.
- Maintain trusted relationships with asset managers, property managers and operators. Present recommendations, explain uncertainty and support informed client decisions.
Team leadership and practice development
- Help build Toronto’s existing building performance capacity, standardization, business development.
- Chair the proposed Existing Buildings Working Group, coordinate account opportunities and delivery priorities, and maintain an action log. Discipline directors retain technical and staffing authority.
- Develop proposals and follow-on assignments with established BPA relationship leads. Support BPA Retrofit Accelerator project development and DRAI readiness, including pipeline evidence, delivery methods and technical application inputs.
Working-group leadership and business development are defined secondary responsibilities, with time allocated alongside the role’s project delivery commitments.
Required qualifications and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, building engineering or a related engineering discipline, and approximately 10 years of relevant experience in existing building performance and retrofit work.
- Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario, or an existing Canadian P.Eng. licence with eligibility to obtain Ontario registration before assuming independent engineering responsibility.
- Demonstrated delivery experience in decarbonization studies, energy audits, metering and M&V, with examples of recommendations progressing into implementation.
- Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC, hydronic systems, central plants, heat pumps, BAS and controls. Ability to diagnose operational issues using field observations, trend data and testing.
- Experience managing consulting project budgets and multidisciplinary contributors, reviewing technical work and communicating with building owners and operators.
- Working knowledge of applicable ASHRAE energy audit practices and IPMVP principles, including baselines, adjustments, measurement boundaries and savings uncertainty.
- Ability to guide energy modellers and assess model results critically. Strong analytical, report-writing and presentation skills, and ability to undertake site work across the Greater Toronto Area.
Preferred credentials and additional experience
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP) designations are strongly preferred.
- Recognized Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) training, such as CIET’s Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning, and/or a recognized commissioning certification is an asset.
- Experience with energy management, fault detection, incentive programs, portfolio planning, and coordinating envelope measures with mechanical retrofit design.
- Familiarity with IES-VE, RETScreen or comparable energy modelling tools, building performance data platforms, and existing-building certifications such as BOMA BEST, ENERGY STAR and LEED O+M.
