The Detectors Group at TRIUMF plays a crucial role in the field of particle and nuclear physics. They specialize in designing, developing, manufacturing, and assembling detector systems for both local and global projects. Currently, we are seeking a highly skilled Journeyperson Machinist to join our team.

A CNC Machinist at TRIUMF provides specialized research and development machining services, working independently to create precise parts for research projects while meeting tight tolerances. The role also involves offering technical support, troubleshooting, as well as assembling parts and components for various research programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key responsibilities include:

  • Programming, operating, and safe maintenance of CNC lathe & CNC vertical machining centers.
  • Machining of plastics, ceramics, and metals.
  • Manufacture, align, glue, wrap, and assemble scintillator parts and components.
  • Providing consultation relating to parts fabrication and ease of manufacturing to scientists and engineers.
  • Provide technical support to detector assembly.
  • Liaise with other machinists and external shops on techniques and processes relating to TRIUMF’s requirements.
  • Procurement and inventorying of material and tools.
  • General shop clean-up, housekeeping, and safe operation of powered equipment.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities; however, the incumbent is expected to provide coaching and mentoring to less-experienced machinists.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated expertise in machining and develop solutions to unusual manufacturing requirements.
  • Extensive experience in CNC Lathe and CNC Vertical Mill, fluent with CAM programs with preference for MasterCAM and Autodesk Fusion.
  • Proficiency with CAD programs with preference for SolidWorks.
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances including quality control and precision measurement.
  • Proficiency with general shop equipment such as bandsaw, belt-sander, drill press, etc.
  • Experience in handling and assembly of fragile components.
  • Research and development experience an asset.
  • Basic knowledge in the production and assembly of sensitive electronic and mechanical devices.
  • Knowledge and experience with machining various ceramics with PCD tools is an asset.
  • Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including word processor and spreadsheet software.
  • The ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • The ability to work with changing requirements and balancing priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
Certified as a Machinist Level 4 in the ITABC program or Red Seal Endorsement with a minimum of 4 years post-certification experience.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

Salary Range:

$56,000.00 - $70,000.00
