What can you expect from this position:

Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Maintenance this position is responsible for designing and producing various signs for terminals, garages, support buildings, airside and groundside; label vehicles either on-site or in the shop e.g. fire trucks, Airfield Maintenance mobile equipment and trucks, taxi and limos, etc.; install signs or labels on-site; engrave various labels; cut stencils; print in large format. The incumbent will utilize specific computer programs to create designs and layouts.

As a Sign Maker, you will:

  • Cut and prepare many different substrates and materials of varying in size and scale that are typically used within the airport
  • Perform installation of signs on-site in a safe and planned environment, including scheduling and coordinating site-checks with clients to complete the work, as well as the use of various safety equipment such as scaffolding and barriers
  • Operate specialized large format equipment such as a router table, printers and plotters, and laminators as well as using typical manual tools and power tools
  • Be responsible for regular inspection and maintenance of existing equipment
  • Provide corrective maintenance services to all signs in the airport when reported as damaged or failing by our clients or external inspectors
  • Apply a variety of surface coverings such as vinyl wraps glass frosting, including preparing materials and surface areas to receive new finishes and removing previous substrates and coverings
  • Provide updates to production schedules, review specifications and as-built drawings for existing signage, provide storage of and disposal of certain hazardous materials, and test new or improved products and equipment and providing recommendations regarding the potential benefits or effectiveness for use at the Airport
  • Observe safety and standard operating procedures and taking safety precautions when working in public area and oversee material inventory to make sure certain products are on hand and available at all time

This is a unionized position with an hourly wage of $33.47, based on a 40 hour work week. The successful candidate must be available to commence the duties of the position once a selection decision has been made. A technical test will be administered as a part of the competitive process. 

This is the role for you, if you have:

  • Diploma or certificate course in sign graphics and/or a minimum of 5 years of combined equivalent work experience and education
  • Industry experience or industry related experience (aviation, transportation, etc.)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in sign design and production
  • A valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s license 
  • A valid “DA” AVOP or the ability to obtain one for Buildings within 30 days of appointment to position
  • The ability to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance at the designated level for the position

Knowledge and skills you bring, that set-you up for success:

  • Proficient in current design software including Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Gerber Omega 6.0, Gerber Artpath, Onyx, Flexi, and Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent programs
  • Experience with colour pallets and colour matching
  • Able to operate and troubleshoot specialized production equipment such as router table, printers, plotters, and laminators
  • The ability to plan and organize work order from conception to completion
