Description

Plan, organize, control and direct the activities of a 20+ million revenue facility operation(s) to accomplish desired objectives in a safe and efficient manner. Set strategic direction for Facility Manager(s) and corresponding facilities if applicable. Provide leadership, which results in positive employee/employer relations and project a professional corporate image. Promote and manage effective and profitable operations and resource management, high production standards, a sound risk management program, and facilitate business expansion.
Certain Essential Functions listed below may or may not be applicable to each General Manager position depending upon varying local organizational structure.



 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and coordinate the efforts of Facility Manager(s), Sales Manager, Sales Representatives, Administrative Personnel, and Maintenance Manager.

  • Manage hiring, training, development, and evaluation of personnel to ensure service commitments are met and employees remain productive and motivated.

  • Ensure adherence to wage and hour laws, compensating personnel in accordance with established guidelines.

  • Maintain high appearance standards for all employees.

  • Foster a safe working environment and implement a safety program to recognize and reward safe and productive employees.

  • Plan and route collection services to maximize personnel and equipment efficiency.

  • Implement Preventive Maintenance programs to reduce downtime, improve image, and lower maintenance costs, ensuring the most cost-effective service delivery.

  • Develop and oversee an effective container repair, delivery, and switch-out program that enhances the company’s image.

  • Implement ongoing cost control measures, monitor buying practices, and optimize purchasing to reduce expenses.

  • Set production standards for all phases of operation.

  • Promote an accident prevention program aimed at reducing claims, injuries, and recognizing safe employees.

  • Enter and manage payroll bi-weekly.

  • Ensure Operations Supervisors use the Full Route Roll-Off Dispatch system and optimize routes using the Route Smart system.

  • Conduct annual commercial and residential route audits.

  • Analyze Roll Off account profitability semi-annually.

  • Ensure that all purchases are tracked through a purchase order system and are aligned with company guidelines.

  • Ensure timely billing and revenue collection for all services.

  • Regularly review profit and loss statements and make adjustments to achieve financial goals.

  • Develop an operations profit plan, including income sources, operational costs, growth objectives, and desired profit margins.

  • Work with Sales Manager and/or Sales Representatives to forecast sales for each product/service.

  • Set and review pricing guidelines for products/services.

  • Promote a customer-focused approach throughout operations.

  • Manage the sales team to meet objectives, priorities, and track potential customers using approved software.

  • Identify opportunities for growth and expansion in both primary and secondary market areas.

  • Negotiate and review existing contracts.

  • Represent the company positively in local civic affairs and community engagements.

  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent experience in an operational environment requiring analytical and management skills.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the waste industry or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of equipment required for waste collection, processing, or disposal.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and management skills.

  • Ability to interpret safety rules, manuals, and reports, and communicate effectively with staff.

  • Physical ability to regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 20 pounds.

  • Some travel may be required, depending on organizational structure.

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands/fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.

  • Ability to lift/move up to 10 pounds regularly, and up to 20 pounds occasionally.

Working Conditions:

  • 80% of time spent in an indoor office environment.

  • Occasional work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including hot, cold, and wet conditions.

  • Noise level is usually moderate.

  • Some travel may be required, depending on organizational structure.
