Department Title: Undergrad Intern – Investment Management: Franklin Real Asset Advisors

Location: Calgary, Alberta. The candidate will be expected to work in the Calgary office on a full-time basis, coming into the office for 5 days a week.

Position Summary: 

Department Overview:

Franklin Real Asset Advisors (FRAA) is responsible for the management of the Franklin Global Real Assets Funds (FGRAF).  These Funds invest in private real estate, infrastructure and natural resources assets.  The FRAA team is responsible for all investment decisions, and the coordination of the trading, administration, reporting and marketing of the FGRAF Funds.

The FGRAF funds invest in a diversified range of real assets and sector exposures, each with distinct traits and varying responses to macroeconomic shifts.

The Calgary office of FRAA continues to grow, as we seek to grow our business and diversify our product offerings.  This internship will provide an opportunity to gain experience in and contribute to all facets of the portfolio management process.

By the end of your internship, an intern can expect to learn:

  • To apply academic knowledge of financial analysis to real-world scenarios
  • To gain exposure and practical experience in private markets investing
  • To develop and improve communication and teamwork skills
  • To network and build relationships with mentors, peers, and potential employers in the private markets
  • To explore career opportunities and identify personal strengths and interests in investing

Key Responsibilities can Include:

Qualitative research and investment monitoring

  • Attend quarterly investor update calls for underlying investments and take notes for research files.
  • Research current and prospective private infrastructure and real estate managers and evaluate managers based on set criteria.
  • Thematic research on infrastructure and real estate industry trends for contribution to whitepapers.

Quantitative analysis

  • Compile data on existing and prospective underlying funds and create/update comparative fund analysis tables.
  • Populate financial models with historical data and collaborate with investment team on forecasting.
  • Collaborate with internal Franklin Templeton business units to automate data requirements.

Compensation Range: This is a full-time internship where students will work approximately 38 hours per week and earn competitive hourly pay of $23 CAD per hour, depending on location, and year in school. There are several factors taken into consideration in making compensation decisions including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
