Bridge Planning Specialist

Role Responsibilities

 

Reporting to the Director of Bridge Engineering, the Bridge Planning Specialist leads development of standards, guidelines, and development of tools relating to bridge conceptual design.  Bridge conceptual design involves the determination of the optimal location, size, and geometry of new bridges, with a focus on ensuring a sustainable and cost effective bridge design.

 

The position:
 

1. Develop and Maintain Bridge Conceptual Design Standards
 

• Lead the creation and maintenance of bridge design guidelines, tools, and best practices.
• Ensure integration of bridge requirements into highway planning and design.
• Collaborate with regulatory authorities and oversee training on bridge planning tools.

2. Provide Expert Technical Advice
 

• Advise on bridge design, hydrotechnical parameters, and regulatory issues.
• Support infrastructure resiliency efforts and integration of bridge needs into highway plans.

 

3. Oversee Inspection & Maintenance Programs
 

• Manage the Pier Scour Inspection and River Protection Works Inspection programs and lead the subsequent engineering assessments of the inspection results.
• Utilize GIS analysis to monitor stream migration and recommend protective measures.

 

4. Supervise Bridge Planning Team
 

• Assign tasks, mentor staff, and conduct performance reviews.
• Guide strategic planning and team contributions to departmental goals.
• Conduct performance evaluations and support staff development

Qualifications

Required:

 

• A related university degree (e.g., Civil Engineering), supplemented by at least ten (10) years of related experience in bridge conceptual design and hydrotechnical engineering
• Registered or eligible to obtain membership with APEGA as a P.Eng.

Assets:

 

• Master’s degree (e.g., Bridge Engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydrotechnical Engineering)
• Experience with roadway geometry design and functional planning
• Experience with economic analysis of design alternatives 
• Knowledge of Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridor bridge standards
• Experience supervising small, technical teams
• Familiarity with other areas of bridge engineering (e.g., inspection, structural, construction, fabrication)

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

 

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am - 4:30 pm).

This position is located at the Twin Atria Building, 4999 98 Ave, Edmonton, AB T6B 2X3.
 

• Traveling will consist of 5% of the work schedule.
• Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
• Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
